Swedish political parties
Swedish political parties
Election information sweden.
admin Tuesday 12 June 2007

Since 1917 the most significant party in Sweden has been the Swedish Social Democratic Party, Socialdemokraterna. This party has been the leading party in Sweden basically every year. Only in four elections did this party achieve so few votes in the Swedish elections that it has become a minority: in 1976, 1979, 1991 and 2006.

In the election 2006 four cabinet parties (the Centre Party, the Christian Democrats, the Liberal People's Party and the Moderate Party) formed Alliance for Sweden. They won the election that year 2006.

Since the election in 2006 Sweden has a new government and a new Prime Minister. The center-right alliance led by Fredrik Reinfeldt of the Moderate Party won over the Social Democrats and their left-wing allies. The result brought a 12 year Social Democratic rule to an end and ended the career of Prime Minister Göran Persson. After the election Göran Persson resigned from politics.
