Carl XVI Gustav is the king of Sweden. He became king in 1973. Before him from 1950 Gustav VI was king. Carl XVI Gustav and his wife, Sylvia and their children Kronprinsessan Victoria, duchess of Västergötland (born in 1977) Prins Carl Philip, duke of Värmland (born in 1979) Prinsessan Madeleine, duchess of Hälsingland och Gästrikland (born in 1982) are very good representatives of Sweden. The king has very little power in Sweden. His authority is mostly symbolic and representational. Prince Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus, Duke of Jämtland, was the youngest of five children and the only son of Sweden's Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sibylla. His father Gustaf Adolf unfortunately died in a airplanecrash in 1947. The king of Sweden Carl XVI Gustav then was only nine month old. The swedish king pays State Visits abroad and receives those to Sweden, opens the Annual Session of the Parliament, Chairs the Special Council held during a change of Government, holds regular Information Councils with Ministers, Chairs the meetings of the Foreign Affairs Council, and receives and signs Letters of Credence of foreign ambassadors to Sweden — and signs those of Sweden to foreign nations. Worldwide, Carl XVI Gustaf is probably best known as the presenter of the Nobel Prizes each year. He also hands over the Polar Music Prize. The King holds honorary doctoral degrees from; Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm School of Economics and from Åbo Akademi University in Finland.
